This article considers the socio-economic conditions and
biographical experiences that may account for the involvement of
young adults (age 16-25 years) in prostitution. Discusses the use
of the terms 'sexual exploitation' and 'prostitution'. Argues that
the dominance of the predatory/abusive adult explanation has
overshadowed other factors. Criticises neo-liberal economic and
social policy developments that have increased unemployment and
poverty in young people. Concludes these policy issues need to be
addressed to prevent prostitution seeming a viable option.
