Male vicitms
This section only includes
statistics that are specific to male victims and
does not reiterate information which applies to
all victims.
It should be noted that when men
are the victims of violence, that the perpetrator is far more
likely to be male than female.
Domestic
violence
For more detailed information on
male victims of domestic violence, please click here.
In 2004 there were 2.5 million
incidents of domestic violence against men. [British Crime
Survey]
Whilst this produces a figure of 1
in 6 men experiencing domestic violence at some point in their
lives, 47% of men experience a single incident. [British Crime
Survey].
In a review of 748 high risk
victims in London, none were male.
Forced
marriage
15% of victims of forced marriage
are male. Although more research needs to be done, current evidence
suggests that a significant proportion of these are disabled or gay
(or suspected of being gay).
Genital
mutilation
Whilst male circumcision is not
directly comparable to female genital mutilation (also known as
'female circumcision' or 'cutting') it is nevertheless the case
that a significant proportion (estimates range from 15-25%) of the
male population worldwide have their genitals physically and
permanently altered at an age when they are unable to give consent
and this constitutes a violation of bodily integrity.
'Honour' based
violence
'Honour' killings represent the
most overt and brutal method of controlling and subordinating
women. Men may also occasionally fall victim to 'honour' killings,
but they are rarely killed by their own families. Instead they are
more usually murdered by the relatives of a woman or girl who is
believed to have been 'dishonoured' by the victim. It should be
noted that men usually have greater bargaining power and may
sometimes escape death by paying the other family off or may be
spared because their tribal or community connections, which would
mean that a murder would result in further vendetta killings.
Rape and sexual
assault
Almost 3% of men reported a
non-consensual sexual experience as adults and over 5% of men
reported sexual abuse as a child. [Coxell A, King M, Mezey G,
Gordon D. Lifetime Prevalence, characteristics, and associated
problems of non-consensual sex in men].
Stalking
Over 1.2 million women and 900,000
men are stalked every year. This equates to 8% of women and 6% of
men. Over the course of a lifetime, 19% of women and 12% of men
have experienced stalking or harassment at some point. [Home Office
Research paper: Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking:
Findings from the British Crime Survey March 2004]
Sex
trafficking
There are no documented cases of
adult men being trafficked into the UK for sexual exploitation.
However, there have a been a small number of cases involving
boys.
