National Occupational Standards (NOS)
What are National Occupational Standards?
National Occupational Standards
(NOS) describe what an individual needs to do, know and understand
in order to carry out a particular job role or function.
How can National Occupational Standards be
used?
They can be used to:
- describe good practice in particular areas of work
- set out a statement of competence which
bring together the skills, knowledge and understanding
necessary to do the work
- provide managers with a tool for a wide variety of workforce
management and quality control
- offer a framework for training and development
- form the basis of a range vocational qualifications.
There are various NOS and they are
divided into 'suites' of particular areas of work.
How can I use NOS?
NOS are standards of best practice
and thus can be used for recruitment and personal development.
AVA and NOS
All of AVA's training courses have
the relevant NOS listed within the course outline to assist
learners in identifying the benefits to their professional
development and selecting the most appropriate course. AVA has
mapped their training courses to the standards for the most
relevant suites and provided information on related suites.

'Preventing and Tackling Domestic and Sexual Abuse and Violence'.
This suite is designed to reflect the knowledge and skills
that are required to carry out this work. The NOS are relevant for
any practitioner whose work brings them into contact with survivors
and/or perpetrators of violence.

Please note that each standard
is a combination of skills, knowledge and actions, therefore it is
important to remember that although training provides you with the
skills and knowledge needed, further work will be required by the
practitioner to complete the standard.
