Course description

This course will focus particularly on the experiences of adolescents as victims and as perpetrators of vawg, with the inclusion of the following key issues:

  • teenage pregnancy
  • gender
  • child to parent abuse
  • domestic violence in young people's own intimate relationships
  • barriers for young people accessing services
  • sexual violence within a gang culture
  • sexualisation of young people

The course will discuss how to ask adolescents about violence, how to give advice and how to risk assess and safety plan. The course will comprise of interactive activities, group discussions and the use of films to illustrate key topics.

There will be networking opportunities to discuss your own practice and meet other professionals working in similar fields.

Learning objectives

  • To expand on delegates' existing knowledge of and experience of vawg
  • To understand the specific ways adolescents can be affected by vawg
  • To make links between forms of violence for adolescents
  • To learn how to challenge myths and stereotypes with young people
  • To learn how to undertake safety planning and risk assessment with teenagers
  • To learn about good practice examples and projects nationally.

Who should attend?

Anyone who works with adolescents where the above issues may be a factor. The course is designed for professionals and practitioners who have had previous basic awareness training in vawg and/or the related issues.

Examples of staff that would benefit from attending are: social workers, Connexions advisers, refuge staff, youth workers, YOT workers, teachers and police.
