Domestic Violence, Substance Misuse and BAMER communities - Level 2

Course description

This course looks at how practitioners can work with the overlapping issues of domestic violence and substance use for women from the Black, Asian, Minority, Ethnic and Refugee communities. Participants will be encouraged to explore the impact of ethnicity, gender and culture in women's experiences. The course will look at particular communities and explore pathways to seeking help and how to engage and work with women.

Learning objectives

  • To look in detail at issues of ethnicity and culture focusing on particular groups and their help seeking behaviour
  • To explore in depth how practitioners can work and support women presenting with this duality with examples of models of working and research on domestic violence and substance use
  • To explore ways of managing risk and safety plans for women who are particularly at risk from extended family or community members
  • To learn from the experiences of a guest speaker working with women from the BAMER communities who experience domestic violence.

Who should attend?

Anyone who already has a basic understanding of domestic violence and problematic substance use and wishes to develop their skills to address the experiences of BAMER women.

NB. It is a requirement for this course that participants have attended the Domestic Violence, Problematic Substance Use and BAMER communities Level 1 training or equivalent course from another provider.

This course is delivered in partnership with EACH.

Preventing and Tackling Domestic Sexual Abuse and Violence NOS:

BH202 Challenge public attitudes towards domestic and/or sexual abuse/violence

GK105 Advocate on behalf of victims/survivors of domestic and/or sexual abuse/violence

GK102 Deliver interventions towards increasing the safety of individual victims/survivors of domestic and/or sexual abuse/violence

GK101 Provide access to information for victims/survivors of domestic and/or sexual abuse/violence

DE5 (CJ C205) Establish and maintain contact with victims, survivors and witnesses which acknowledges the effects of their experience

BI201 Assess the needs of and risks to victims/survivors of domestic abuse/violence

BI302 Contribute to developing plans towards managing the risk of harm to victims/survivors of domestic and/or sexual abuse/violence
