Prevention Work Training for Primary Age Teachers and Youth Workers

Course description

This course will look at basic domestic violence theory with a focus on the impacts on children between five - ten years of age. The course will cover behavioural and emotional impacts but with particular information on cognitive development and the effects of domestic violence on a child's education. Practical examples on how to discuss domestic violence, gender and healthy relationships with children will be discussed, and relevant resources will be shared.

There will also be a workshop on responding to disclosures and safety planning under a child protection framework. Good practice guidelines for schools and youth settings will be provided.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will:

  • expand on existing knowledge of and experience in domestic violence work
  • learn about how to raise the issue with young people
  • be able to respond to a disclosure
  • have increased confidence when challenging myths and stereotypes
  • know links between domestic violence and child protection
  • understand the ways children can be affected by domestic violence
  • perform a risk assessment and produce a safety plan
  • have an awareness of tools and activities that can be used with children.

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at teachers and school support staff, school nurses, designated child protection officers, deputy and head teachers as well as youth workers and other professionals undertaking preventative work with young people.
