Safeguarding Against Forced Marriage and so called Honour-based Violence

Course description

The course looks at the overlapping issues of domestic violence, patriarchy, power and control and examines the impact of these. The course involves skill development on practice based issues such as safeguarding children and young people, safety planning and risk assessment, as well as providing an oversight of the relevant legislation, policies and procedures for staff working with women fleeing forced marriage (FM) or so called 'Honour Based Violence' ('HBV'). The course is designed to increase participants' knowledge and awareness of forced marriage, so called 'Honour Based Violence' and to offer space for reflection on current and future work approaches in order to operate within a good practice framework.

Learning objectives

  • To understand definitions of forced and arranged marriage and so called 'HBV'.
  • To gain an insight into and understanding of the historical and cultural roots surrounding FM.
  • To know which communities are most affected.
  • To understand the legal framework.
  • To gain an insight into the effects of forced marriage and so called 'HBV'.
  • To gain insight into how to provide services for safeguarding victims of forced Marriage and so called 'HBV'.
  • To review safety planning and risk assessments in cases of FM and so called 'HBV'.

Who should attend?

Anyone working in environments where these issues may be presented including staff from schools, colleges, refuges, domestic violence projects, advice centres, health, social work settings, youth services, connexions and violence against women projects.

This course has been developed in partnership with IMKAAN.

GK301 Provide support to victims of forced marriages
