Substance Use - Theory and Practice Level 1: for domestic violence workers

Course description

This course will explore attitudes and beliefs around drugs and alcohol as well as exploring the different types of substances and how they can be used and misused within a domestic violence context. The legal and health issues around drugs and working with clients who use drugs will also be covered as well as appropriate methods to ask about substance use; the consequences and next steps after disclosure.

Learning objectives

  • To gain basic awareness of substances and their effects
  • To learn about the myths and realities regarding problematic substance use and domestic violence
  • To understand the legal and health issues surrounding drugs and drug use
  • To learn how to ask about drug/alcohol use and respond to disclosure
  • To learn about different drug/alcohol services and treatment models.

Who should attend?

Priority will be given to staff from front line domestic violence services who wish to improve their response to survivors that may have problematic substance use.

Preventing and Tackling Domestic Sexual Abuse and Violence NOS:

BH202 Challenge public attitudes towards domestic and/or sexual abuse/violence

GK105 Advocate on behalf of victims/survivors of domestic and/or sexual abuse/violence

GK102 Deliver interventions towards increasing the safety of individual victims/survivors of domestic and/or sexual abuse/violence

GK101 Provide access to information for victims/survivors of domestic and/or sexual abuse/violence

DE5 (CJ C205) Establish and maintain contact with victims, survivors and witnesses which acknowledges the effects of their experience

BI201 Assess the needs of and risks to victims/survivors of domestic abuse/violence

BI302 Contribute to developing plans towards managing the risk of harm to victims/survivors of domestic and/or sexual abuse/violence
