Supporting Survivors to Recover from the Impacts of Domestic Violence – Depression and Anxiety

Course description

This course introduces cognitive-behavioural techniques for supporting women who feel depressed or anxious after experiencing violence to regain their well-being. The course distinguishes real fear when women are in danger from anxieties that they wish to control and sadness about their experiences from depressive thoughts and behaviours. It is designed to help workers identify and discuss signs of depression or anxiety, to provide information and to validate women's reactions to their experience of abuse. Delegates will try strategies including the use of diary sheets, planning and goal setting. They will practice identifying and challenging negative or anxiety-provoking thoughts.

Learning objectives

  • To explore basic cognitive-behavioural principles for working to overcome depression and anxiety
  • To help workers identify and talk about signs of depression or anxiety in women recovering from vawg
  • To practise cognitive strategies including identifying thoughts, counting thoughts and helping women find alternatives
  • To try out behavioural strategies including planning and goal setting
  • To learn about a range of psychological tools to promote recovery.

Who should attend?

The course will help staff offering direct support to women who have experienced vawg and who are responsible for key work or developing individual support plans. It is assumed that delegates do not have any knowledge about cognitive behavioural therapy or counselling.
