Supporting Survivors to Recover from the Impacts of Domestic Violence – Injured Self-esteem

Course description

Self-esteem is often mentioned but hard to describe. This course outlines different aspects of self-esteem and the ways it can be injured by vawg. Ways of identifying signs of low self-esteem and talking about it with victims are presented. The course will cover simple strategies to build self-esteem through recognition of achievements, separating the person from their experiences and helping them reclaim the right to a sense of enjoyment. There will be opportunities to watch examples of good practice and to experiment with empowering women to choose goals, look after their emotional and physical needs and regain their self-worth.

Learning objectives

  • To improve understanding of the ways vawg injures self-esteem
  • To support women to identify the impacts of abuse(rs) on her self-esteem
  • To be equipped to offer materials to women that may help build their emotional and physical self-esteem
  • To separate the victim of abuse as a person from what has been done to her
  • To explore simple strategies to help women recover from the impacts of vawg.

Who should attend?

The course will benefit front-line staff offering direct support to women who have experienced vawg and who are responsible for key work or developing individual support plans. It is assumed that delegates do not have any knowledge about therapy or counselling.
