Supporting Women in Refuges Experiencing Problematic Substance Use – 2 days
Course
description
This course has been specifically
designed for refuge workers to reflect the legal and practical
complexities of working with residents who are using substances.
Delivered in partnership with the nia project, who
run a specialist refuge for women with problematic drug or alcohol
use, the course can be adapted for a one or two day
programme. This course has also been adapted for
delivery to outreach workers and we would be happy to
discuss your individual training needs to make the course suitable
for your agency.
Learning
objectives
- To understand the difference between substance use and misuse;
defining harm and how dependency can be of both psychological and
physical nature
- To explore delegate's own beliefs around substance users and
the importance of language and terminology
- To explore the different substances, their effects and long
term/short term health risks and common poly drug use
- To learn how substance use can impact on children
- To understand how routine questions for substance use can be
included in assessment processes
- To gain skills in asking questions that will enable service
users to disclose any problematic substance use
- To understand potential risks from substance use and how to
adapt your current risk assessment model
- How to implement a drugs policy within the refuge
- How to manage drug/alcohol users safely within the refuge and
undertake basic harm minimisation
- Safety planning for women who are remaining in abusive
relationships
- To explore and learn about tools available for working with
substance users
- To learn the different forms of substance treatment
available
- To learn how partnership working can help take work
forward
Who should
attend?
Refuge workers or outreach workers
working with domestic violence survivors who are using
substances.
This course is delivered in
partnership with the nia project.
